Why is the agent rate worse than the mid-market rate?
The pound trades on a managed float with a history of sharp step-devaluations and, at times, a parallel-market premium and FX availability constraints. That makes the gap between the official rate and what it actually costs to source dollars or RMB the defining cost of an Egyptian import — often more than the duty itself. Confirm both the rate and that the FX can actually be obtained before you commit.
How does the FX leg change my landed cost?
FX multiplies the goods value, and most corridors charge duty and VAT on the CIF value that includes the goods price, so any extra FX spread compounds into the duty and VAT too. Compare the rate the day you pay, not the day you quote, and run the all-in number in the landed-cost calculator before committing.
The EGP reality against the yuan
Egyptian imports clear through Alexandria, Port Said and Cairo airport and sell through Al-Mosky, Al-Ataba and the wholesale trade. Two things make this corridor harder than the duty rate suggests: the ACI/Nafeza advance-cargo registration that must be filed before the goods ship, and Arabic-labelling rules that catch unprepared importers at clearance.
