Using Alipay in Ghana to pay Chinese suppliers
Alipay is everywhere in China, but for Ghana importers it comes with caps, fees and an FX markup. Here is what works, what it costs, and when a cheaper rail wins.
How Alipay works for Ghana importers
- 01 Open a foreign (overseas) Alipay account and link an international card that supports CNY purchases.
- 02 Scan the supplier or marketplace QR / pay the order. Alipay converts at its own rate with a markup.
- 03 Watch the annual cap. Once you approach ¥50,000 you will need another channel for the rest of the year.
When a B2B rail beats Alipay
For business orders, these typically cost less than Alipay and have no small annual cap.

Can you open an overseas Alipay from Ghana?
Alipay's visitor programme (TourPass / overseas wallet) lets you link an international Visa or Mastercard and pay by scanning a merchant or marketplace QR. It runs off your card without a Chinese bank account, but with a low annual cap (~¥50,000) and a ~3% FX markup. It is a point-of-sale wallet, not a wholesale transfer tool. What does Alipay cost vs a B2B rail?
On a ¥20,000 purchase (~₵34,337): an Alipay wallet at ~3% costs ~₵1,030, versus ~₵515 for a B2B rail at ~1.5% — a ₵515 gap. And with the ¥50,000 annual cap, one or two orders exhaust your ceiling. Indicative figures, sampled 2026-06-07; not a quote.
| Channel | Cost | Annual cap |
|---|---|---|
| Alipay (~3%) | ₵1,030 | ¥50,000 |
| B2B rail (~1.5%) | ₵515 | Much higher |
Why can't a foreign Alipay settle to a factory?
A QR payment is a payment to a registered merchant at point of sale, not a peer-to-peer transfer to the supplier's bank. A 1688 supplier wants RMB in their bank account against a wholesale invoice, which a TourPass wallet does not do. So it works to pay an order on a platform that accepts Alipay, not a factory invoice.
When is overseas Alipay genuinely useful?
To pay an order on a retail platform that accepts Alipay (e.g. buying samples AliExpress-style), or small ¥200 - 2,000 purchases. For any production order that needs an invoice and a bank transfer, use a B2B rail. Ghanaian importers commonly fund supplier payments from cedi via a bank transfer or a China-based settlement agent who pays the supplier in RMB; mobile money (MTN MoMo) is widely used to move cedi domestically before conversion, but it does not settle into a Chinese account directly. For repeat orders, a forwarder with a Guangzhou office and a clean RMB account usually gives the tightest all-in cost.
What Alipay won't do for importers
The TourPass programme and its caps change, and not all cards or nationalities are accepted. We do not sell it or advise exceeding the annual cap; verify current terms. For wholesale orders from Ghana, the regulated rail is the practical option. Indicative figures, sampled 2026-06-07; not a quote.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Alipay in Ghana?
You can use a foreign Alipay account linked to an international card, but features are limited: no real P2P, an annual spend cap around ¥50,000, and an FX markup. It suits small purchases more than business orders.
What does Alipay cost for Ghana buyers?
Expect roughly a 3% all-in cost once card fees and FX markup are included, higher than dedicated B2B rails at around 1-3%.
What is the Alipay limit?
Foreign Alipay accounts are generally capped around ¥50,000 per year for purchases, with no peer-to-peer transfers. For larger or recurring orders a regulated provider is the better fit.
What is a cheaper alternative to Alipay?
For paying suppliers from Ghana, B2B providers are usually cheaper and give a clean paper trail with CNY payout.
