What should a 1688 sourcing agent charge?

The usual commission is 3-8% of goods value, scaling down with order size. On a ¥50,000 order (~₵86,033) that is ~₵2,581 to ₵6,883. A good agent pays for themselves through a better factory price and fewer mistakes, not just a fee. Indicative figures, sampled 2026-06-07; not a quote.

What does an agent actually do (and the red flags)?

A good agent finds the right factory, negotiates, consolidates several sellers, checks quality and arranges export. Red flags: refusing to show the factory invoice, a hidden commission buried in an inflated price, no inspection report, or pressure to pay a personal account. Demand line-by-line transparency.

Agent vs buying direct vs a B2B platform?

Buying direct on 1688 is cheaper in theory but needs Chinese, a domestic payment and a Chinese address. A B2B platform (like Alibaba) costs more but is in English with escrow protection. An agent sits between: they unlock 1688 prices with a local service. Choose by your size and risk tolerance.

How do you vet an agent and avoid scams?

Ask for references and real factory invoices, start with a small order, insist on a photo inspection report before shipping, and pay via a traceable B2B rail, not a personal account. A confident agent welcomes transparency; the one who resists it is the risk. Ghanaian importers commonly fund supplier payments from cedi via a bank transfer or a China-based settlement agent who pays the supplier in RMB; mobile money (MTN MoMo) is widely used to move cedi domestically before conversion, but it does not settle into a Chinese account directly. For repeat orders, a forwarder with a Guangzhou office and a clean RMB account usually gives the tightest all-in cost.

What this estimate won't guarantee

Commission bands are indicative and vary by category, order size and inspection services. We do not recommend or guarantee any agent; vetting is your responsibility. Indicative figures, sampled 2026-06-07; not a quote.
